We recently went out of town in our RV and we forgot to bring James' dog bed. We stopped in a PetSmart and picked up a Top Paw Orthopedic Cuddler bed. It is now J's favorite bed! We ended up retiring the Bowsers donut dog bed that James LOVED for years. It was getting a little tired after many years of use and washes (the whole thing comes apart to wash).
The only downside to the Top Paw bed is it can't be washed. So we put blankets on it to keep it clean and wash those regularly.
We think James really likes the sides - he can rest his head on them or he can just collapse over them:
We ended up buying a second cuddler bed and putting one in the car. James can cuddle up when we travel or he can prop himself up looking up front with us. You can't really see the bed here but James is propped up on it looking forward with Chris:
Then when James wants to nap while we drive, he curls up in the cuddler bed and usually props his chin on one of the sides:
